What is a spiritual awakening?

If you ask 100 people what a spiritual awakening is, you’ll probably get 100 different answers. But one thing is common in all experiences: it hits you out of nowhere!

Imagine this: you’re living your life peacefully, convinced that you understand how everything works… and BAM! Something happens that makes you question everything.

It’s like a veil is lifted, revealing a reality far greater than you ever imagined.

Some describe spiritual awakening as an inner death followed by a rebirth. You are no longer the same person, but you don’t yet know who you’ve become.

This process is often triggered by an emotional shock: a breakup, a loss, burnout, illness… something that shakes your foundation and forces you to rethink everything.

For me, spiritual awakening felt like dying and being reborn. Over and over again. It’s like an old version of yourself is dying to make way for something completely new. Like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly… but without an instruction manual and with an existential crisis as a bonus.

Suddenly, your perception of the world radically changes. You become aware of a larger reality, a deeper meaning to your existence.

But more often than not, this transformation doesn’t happen smoothly. Spiritual awakening is usually triggered by a life-changing event: a breakup, grief, illness, job loss… something that shakes your foundation and forces you to question everything.

In my case, it all started after a painful breakup. I was devastated, convinced my life was falling apart… when in reality, it was just beginning in a whole new way. Of course, at the time, I had no idea!

And now, an avalanche of existential questions

Spiritual awakening doesn’t come alone - it arrives with an army of relentless questions that haunt you day and night.

  • Who am I really?

  • What is my purpose on this planet?

  • Is there a hidden meaning behind all this chaos?

  • Does God exist?

  • Why is there suffering? Why is there misery?

It’s like your brain suddenly shifts into philosopher mode, running 24/7. You wake up one morning with a strange sense of detachment, as if you were living someone else’s life. Everything that once made sense now seems absurd, your old habits no longer satisfy you, and your former pleasures leave you indifferent.

So, what’s happening exactly?

Little by little, you begin to understand that life is far more expansive than you thought. You feel a connection to something greater - some call it God, others the Universe, the Source, or Oneness. Regardless of what name you give it, one thing is certain: it’s a transformative and unforgettable experience.

This concept of unity, which you may have read about in books or heard in spiritual talks, suddenly becomes a tangible truth. You’re not just understanding it intellectually anymore - you’re feeling it.

But… Is Spiritual Awakening easy? Spoiler: No.

At this point, you might be thinking, “Wow, this sounds amazing! I want to experience this too!”

Well… how can I put this? It’s not exactly a walk in the park.

Unlike the romanticized idea of spiritual awakening (picture a monk meditating peacefully under a waterfall), the reality is more like an emotional rollercoaster that goes through some pretty dark tunnels.

Because yes, spiritual awakening is also a major inner cleansing. It’s a process where all your beliefs, fears, and childhood wounds resurface.

You start to see through the illusions. You realize how much we’ve all been conditioned—by society, culture, family. And this realization can be a real shock.

Imagine watching a movie you always thought was a documentary… and suddenly realizing everything was scripted. Disorienting, right?

Why are Empaths and Highly Sensitive People more likely to experience a spiritual awakening?

If you’re an empath, you’re probably more sensitive to other people’s energies, intense emotions, and the suffering in the world. And guess what? This hypersensitivity makes you an ideal candidate for a spiritual awakening.

1. A Deep connection to emotions

Empaths feel everything intensely. They absorb surrounding energies like sponges and are often overwhelmed by emotions that don’t even belong to them.

When spiritual awakening happens, this hypersensitivity becomes even stronger. Repressed emotions surface, sometimes uncontrollably. You might experience waves of sadness, joy, or unconditional love for no apparent reason.

2. An innate search for meaning

Empaths can’t settle for a superficial life. They naturally seek to understand the "why" behind things.

This deep need for meaning often leads them to question reality, ponder existence, and ultimately… open up to spiritual awakening.

3. A wide-open heart (sometimes too much)

Love and compassion are at the core of an empath’s nature. But this openness also exposes them to the world’s pain, which can trigger an existential crisis.

An awakened empath deeply feels the interconnectedness of all living beings. This realization can be overwhelming but also leads to profound inner transformation.

4. Heightened sensitivity to subtle energies

Many empaths feel energies without even realizing it. They pick up on "vibes" in places, people, and sometimes even receive intuitive messages with no logical explanation.

During spiritual awakening, these perceptions intensify - frequent synchronicities, déjà vu sensations, heightened intuition… They start perceiving reality through a new lens.

The (sometimes strange) symptoms of awakening

If you’re going through a spiritual awakening, expect to experience some pretty weird stuff:

  • Body overheating: Your back burns, your hands tingle, and you feel like you’re plugged into an electrical outlet.

  • Involuntary tremors or movements: Sometimes, during meditation, your body starts dancing on its own. (No, you’re not possessed - breathe.)

  • Extreme emotional sensitivity: A butterfly passing by can make you cry for an hour.

  • Profound loneliness: You feel like no one understands you, and sometimes, you just want to disconnect from the world.

At one point, I was so overwhelmed that I ended up in the ER, convinced my body was shutting down. The doctors found nothing… obviously!

Spiritual Awakening: the journey is worth every step

Yes, awakening can be chaotic and confusing. But it transforms you into a more authentic and aligned version of yourself.

And believe me… even though the path is full of challenges, it’s worth every single step.
